When you are with people that suck at something, it makes you feel like you are good at it! I was reminded of this recently when trying to learn to swim laps in the pool. Everyone there was better than me! I hated that! I felt like a dufus, experiencing humiliation and drownage at the same time.
I thought…Dang where are the people that suck (water down the nose while trying to breathe of course) like I do? I want to think I’m getting better, and I’m not “feeling” that while next to the “experts.” Well, feelings are deceiving. The truth is…those around me were kind enough to recognize my struggle and provide very helpful instruction and encouragement.
In this humiliating stage of failure and constant challenge, a strong leadership principle comes to light…
If I’m not with those who are better than me…I will never get better
Who are you learning from? Who is speaking life, hope and challenge into your life? Are you really seeking to be better, from those that are better?
Tough one for me Artie since I am pretty isolated in this small community. I rely on people like you and Scott and Ron and others to glean from. I also like to read. There are several guys I enjoy spending time with here that are more on my level, which is sort of counterproductive to your post. I recognize that but am stumped a little as to how to counteract it.

I understand you hard place, been there myself. That’s what I want to talk to you about.
Honestly I am doing nothing but learning right now. Recently I’ve discovered a plethora of people that have spoken so much insight into through various outlets like blogs, twitter, and ebooks. I’m at a crossroad in my life where I think I’m discovering that my ministry may look vastly different than when I set out. Artie, guys like you and your thoughts on leadership and church are helping confirm that. Thank you!

I love it when God speaks loud, often and through many voices. It really sounds like He’s stirring your heart Chris. Praying for you now.
I really appreciated this post. I belong to a ladies’ small group of mixed ages. Some young mothers to grandmothers. What I like about this diverse group is we all encourage one another and give loving instruction when life gives a challenge and/or struggle. Your post are always a blessing. I have shared many of them with others.
Have a Happy Fourth of July.
Blessings
I love the title of the post. I’m not that gutsy yet but its good! In any case, its easier to be around mediocre people but we won’t grow. It’s hard to work with a high achieving team when everyone around you operates at a high level but it causes you to grow more.
