Do Politics really Need Your Voice?

I don’t think so!

It just hurts and divides. Don’t marry Biblical Truth to politics…EVER! It’s just not right. You can address a specific issue, when interpreted and presented in love on a sound Biblical foundation, but NEVER allow it to be tied to a political view, party  or politician.

Leading a VERY DIVERSE church I see this divide on a daily basis. Our church is comprised of every party and platform, and yet we walk in unity. Because we limit ANY reference to politics… Specific issues yes, politics never.

If you express specific political issues from the plattform, Facebook or Twitter, believe me, you are not involved in Kingdom work. That divides the Kingdom, and never builds it.

We are called to build the Kingdom, not divide it. Agree or disagree?

Amen. And yet more amen. I have some friends who are sure God votes republican and others just as sure that He is democrat through and through. It’s easy for us as Christians to assume that views we hold are the Truth simply because we hold them and we are Christian but political dogma isn’t necessarily Biblical truth.

  2. Amen. Agreed. We are to preach Jesus Christ and Christ alone. Jesus did not endorse any particular economic system. Jesus did not endorse any particular governmental system. Jesus did not give us instructions on how to wipe out poverty. We may have opinions on these topics but church leaders are not to use their position in the Church to promote their opinion.

Question, how do you feel about voter guides which show how the candidates voted on a variety of issues such as abortion? I have seen these distributed in church. No particular candidate or party was endorsed in the literature.

Thanks Mark. I don’t think passing out a voting record is a good idea. You are still putting someone’s name out there and stating it in a positive or negative light. There could be someone there who is likes that person for a totally different reason.
Our policy is to never mention a person or politics. If we need to address an issue, we try to do it, when the issue isn’t on the front page. Even timing can be seen as divisive.

    Wow, unbelievable and sad.

  4. Totally agree. I refuse to engage even in private conversations. I quit a men’s early morning Bible study (only had 5 guys) because they spent too much time talking politics. I had better things to do.

  5. Beverly Alfonso says:

Sadly, the church doesn’t seem to realize that today’s politics are very involved in scriptural truth and interfere with our freedom(s) – freedom of speech and freedom of religion are connected with teaching and preaching the Word of God and sharing the love of Christ. The church leaders should be an example to their “flock” of standing against evil and sin issues which are very much dividing the nation. Our Constitution and Scripture was once where the nation’s government got direction. That is no longer the case and if Christians don’t speak out against tyranny and the evil that is changing what our founding fathers based our way of government on, we will soon be the Jews of Hitler’s day! When we have no freedom, we won’t be permitted to share the gospel. When “politics” attempt to silence our voices, where will that leave the church? Defenseless and useless! The wonderful thing about America has always been that we have the right to stand for what is right based on God’s love and justice. Diversity is a good thing UNTIL it is more concerned about offending people rather than God! The “church” has become weak and afraid of the “world” and the shepherds who are leading are few and far between. Revival is for Christians and it begins with repentance. That can happen only when sin is pointed out and God is pointed to. The sin of our nation is destroying us and Christians are not only part of it, we are allowing it to happen with hardly a whimper. Especially from the pulpit(s)!

    • Beverly, so you’re saying that the current government is going to be able to do what the Romans, Russians and Chinese tried to do and failed? They all tried to wipe out Christianity and the Church has always managed to outlive her pall bearers.

The Romans were one of the most oppressive governments ever devised yet Paul never once in my New Testament says anything negative about them His only references to government indicated that we should obey the civil authorities.

If the church is weak, it is because it failed to unequivocally preach the Gospel not because it failed to take a political stand.

    • Brian Chapman says:

God Bless You Beverly! And Thank You!

  6. Jay Schiesl says:

Good stuff, we must never forget that it was Paul’s Roman citizenship that allowed him to preach the Gospel. Without his citizenship, he would have been killed. Also, it was the Roman roads that allowed him to travel. Oh, we also must mention that it was his imprisonment and house arrest that allowed him to travel and write. And finally, I believe it was the Jews desperate attempt to keep their well standing with the Roman government that contributed to them missing their Messiah.

My point is that in the end, we are all under God’s authority. He puts our leaders in control and asks us to pray for them. Getting too involved in politics only keeps us from our calling to build the Kingdom.
