10-Traits of a Craveable Leader

The true strength of every great leader is their ability to draw people to them, and lead them.

That magnetism, that ability to pull along other great leaders, is found in the leader who is Craveable! That leader will look something like this…

1. They are very slow to Speak

  • Asking Questions…A lot of questions

  • Rarely if ever offer an opinion or give unsolicited advice

2. They are Very quick to Listen

  • You have their undivided attention

  • They don’t check their phone while talking to you

3. They are all into You

  • When talking, you feel they really care about you

  • They remember things you have told them, and ask you about them

4. They know it’s better to give than receive

  • They live in the land of generosity

  • They give, and genuinely don’t expect anything in return

5. They don’t think to highly of themselves

  • They give others complete freedom to be honest with them

  • They take correction and advice to heart, and are gracious when receiving it

6. They are eager to learn from anyone

  • They never turn off their knowledge radar, it’s always open to learn

  • They never belittle anyone, but are intentional about learning something from everyone

7. They honor others above themselves

  • It’s not in their nature to be “Glory Hounds”, rather they always know it was someone else

  • They never self promote, and yet they are gracious in receiving praise from others

8. They know words can bring life or death

  • They don’t use words like…Never and Always

  • You always feel better after talking with them, even if you are corrected

9. They don’t  point out others faults…

  • They NEVER speak ill of anyone, nor do they listen to it from others

  • They find something good to say about everyone

10.They are quick to recognize their own shortcomings.

  • They admit their mistakes quickly, and take full responsibility for everyone on their team

  • They never blame a mistake on some else. If another contributed to the short coming, it will be dealt with privately, never before the eyes and ears of others.

Please don’t confuse a “successful” person with a “craveable” one. You can be successful, and no one like you, but…You can’t be craveable, and not see some level of suceess!

Do those you lead see you as a Craveable Leader? Are other leaders drawn to you? Do people seek an audience with you? Those are the fruits of being a truly great craveable leader.

So…How is that working for you?

This is really helpful Artie. Wish I could say that I have arrived. :) As I look back over almost 40 years of pastoral ministry, I can see so many ways I failed. Some of these were my biggest. I hope that age and experience has brought me closer to being this type of leader.

  2. Craveable ppl have the ability 2 draw anybody bc they have what folks are looking for & need.
I’ve been called a good listener. Most ppl just want someone 2 listen 2 them bc they need 2 get some things off their chest.
There are Still things God needs 2 work on & I Must work on. This list will be very helpful as I continue my journey.
    #WorkInProgress
    ThankU 4 being obedient.

I think I have some of these traits. I still have some work to do though! I work with college students on a daily basis so you have to be pretty real with them. They can spot a phony faster than an IRS agent can spot a phony tax return!

With all do respect, you did not attach any Scripture to go along with these points. Some are good/valid but others I’m questioning simply because it seems “man-focused” instead of CHRIST-focused. Even word “magnetism” seems to be more a worldly characteristic than a Godly one……………..

    • Misa, I see all of these as part of fulfilling the second great command to love our neighbor by listening, being tolerant of faults, by being slow to offer rebuke, etc.

I have seen church leaders who view the people in their congregations as minions to do the “ministry” that the leader feels “called” to accomplish. They are shepherds with mutton breath. This type of leader is the opposite of what Artie describes above.

    • Artie Davis says:

Thanks Misa, but I would disagree. “magnetism” is the very thing that drew people to Jesus. That made them hunt him down by the thousands on His day off, and commit a felony (Breaking and Entering) lowering a friend through the roof. With all do respect that was one of Jesus’ greatest assets for the Kingdom.

    • Misa says:

I think we may have to agree to disagree on this. If you look up the word “magnetism” (and it’s synonyms) the common descriptive term is “charm”. The word “charm” in the Bible does not have a positive connotation. Jesus said Himself that He was reflecting what His Father in heaven was doing (John 5:19). And God doesn’t use magnetism. He is a Spirit. That’s how we are drawn to Him, how we worship Him—And He doesn’t need “magnetism” and neither do we if we are walking by the spirit (our spirit in tune with His Spirit) at all times. I don’t want to crave my leaders—I want to crave Jesus. And Mark, yes, we should love our neighbors. But no, we don’t “tolerate” faults but instead we say “no” to them and then let that person know what they need to be restored (Galatians 6:1). We are to be “slow to anger” (Psalm 145:8) but remember God chastises the ones He loves—just like a father would (2 Peter 2:9). Point taken about the “minion” comment. So much more I could say but main point—back it up with Scripture (the REAL substance)—that separates us from the worldly “motivational” speakers.

      • Artie Davis says:

No problem Misa. I explain this in great detail with Scripture in my new book “Craveable” that’s released this Jan. Remind me, and I will make sure you get a complimentary copy :)
